I haven’t checked the Writer Office Hours on Substack before (only started mine this fall) and out of curiosity came to check your articles when I saw your comment there about networking with writers. I really liked this one and subscribed to your newsletter. I live in Finland, I’m an Egyptologist (MA at the University of Manchester) and a writer and because of the lack of pyramids in this neck of the woods I have a day job as well LOL. So fascinating to read about your life in New York.

Hi Leena! Thank you so much for checking out my work. I'm so glad we could connect via office hours and that this piece resonated with you across the Atlantic! I admittedly know very little about Egyptology but think it's a fascinating area of study. I can't wait to read your work.

Thank you for sharing this article! It offers an incredibly important perspective on the changes we need to be making, and I'm glad the current administration is listening to people like Shams DaBaron with the insight and experience to know what helps. Absolutely agree about prioritizing affordable housing!

Here in Finland we operate according to the ”home first” -principle. The homeless often have mental and addiction problems. Traditionally a homeless person was expected to handle those issues successfully before they could qualify for a home by social services. But these days they are first given a home and then they are helped in handling their other issues. Having a home first helps them heal and integrate to society. However, they need to pay their rent but can apply for support from the society. They also get healthcare. The government’s agenda regarding homelessness is to eliminate it by 2027.

A really positive movement is growing to solve the homeless crisis in New York with new collaborations between Albany, the Mayor and the city council. Throw public awareness into this, a new narrative on homelessness. The population is diverse, the shelter system is inhumane warehousing of people and building affordable housing at scale is key.

The new mayor of Los Angeles, Karen Bass. a woman of color has declared a state of emergency over there and is doing many similar things to Mayor Adams. I’m so grateful to live in a world where people like them are leading the charge.

Thank you Sophia for sharing the resources that relate to the homeless crisis. You know it’s a crazy fact that housing solves homelessness. Mayor Adams is actually doing more than any of his predecessors to direct finds towards this goal.

Here is a very comprehensive article from the New Yorker and interview with Shams Dabaron “Da Homeless Hero”
